About Robert Ruston Violins
Robert Ruston is an English violin maker . After initial tuition at the renowned International School of Violin Making at Newark he now works from his workshop near York. In an age of mass production and impersonal service, traditional skills and values are still alive. His violins are entirely constructed with hand tools using traditional techniques and materials in the style of the master violin makers of three centuries ago.
Our Service
We offer a friendly approachable service so don’t hesitate to get in touch if you interested in purchasing a quality hand crafted instrument. A few completed violins are available for inspection and trial- just make an appointment. This is the best way to appreciate the fine quality of the instruments and their tonal qualities.

Precision tuning
Alpine Spruce and European Maple are used to make the plates of the violin. Each plate is painstakingly shaped and arched by hand and ear to maximise the potential resonance and quality of tone. Each bridge is individually carved to complement the instrument before being carefully set up with precision placement of the sound post.
High quality oil based varnishes are used for the finish with various options to vary the final colour and style of finish.

It is only by handling and playing an instrument that one can appreciate its aesthetic and tonal qualities. I have a few completed instruments available for trial. These may be available for immediate purchase. Prices start at around £2000. Significant discounts are offered to registered music students - ask for details of this offer.
If you decide to commission a violin a small deposit is payable but full payment will not be due until you are completely satisfied with your new instrument. This includes a 30 day home trial.
